Whale Migration Season

Whale tail is seen breaching the surface of the ocean

In this region (southern zone, Costa Rica in the OSA canton), we are very lucky to have a double whale migration season. From August to November the humpback whales come up from the South and from December through April a different group comes down from the North. Both groups are seeking warmer waters in order to give birth to their young. Recently, Karen Rusch organized a small group to go whale watching near Caño Island. They were very fortunate to see pods of whales with their calves. It was amazing to see the huge adult whales breaching (jumping out of the water) and the young calves doing the same thing, copying their parents.
